O2 has met Ofcom’s deadline to widen its 3G coverage in the U.K. In February, the telecommunication regulator warned O2 it had until June to meet the terms of its licence, which included providing 3G coverage to more than 80 percent of the U.K. population, or risk termination of the licence four months earlier than expected. A termination could have cost O2 an estimated £40 million (US$80 million).

“O2 has now met its obligation to roll out its 3G services to at least 80 per cent of the UK population,” Ofcom said in a statement. “Ofcom will conduct a further assessment to ensure that all licensees remain in compliance on 31 December 2008.”Ofcom has highlighted it is satisfied with Hutchinson 3G, Orange, T-Mobile and Vodafone’s 3G coverage.
