What are Smart Fans?

Much like other “smart” devices, smart fans allow you to automate the cooling process turning on only as the temperature rises and will automatically turn off as it cools down.
Most of them are formed much like traditional ceiling fans. However, smart fans are equipped with cutting-edge technology that enable them to connect to your home Wi-Fi connection to be then controlled via your smartphone.
Types of Smart Fans

Smart fans are generally divided into two categories, which are:
1. Retrofit Smart Fans
This type of smart fans are regular conventional ceiling fans that can be turned into smart fans.
Although it is possible to turn regular fans into smart fans, the difficulties of doing this greatly depend on the type of fan you already have.
With that being said, if you have a more sophisticated one that uses remote control, for example. You might need a qualified technician to add some additional components such as routers, software and programs to make the fan “smart”.
2. The New Ceiling Fan
On the other hand, there are fans that are already “smart” out of the box. This type of fans are able to connect to your home Wi-Fi connection, thus allowing them to be controlled with your smartphone.
You can control them with a variety of methods depending on the fan’s manufacturer, some are able to be controlled with a mobile app.
And some more fascinating ones are able to be controlled by voice commands with a help from virtual assistants like Siri, Google Home, Apple HomeKit, or Alexa.
How do Smart Fans Work?

Smart fan’s functions are generally the same as that of traditional ceiling fans, which is to give the designated room better air circulation and reduce the heat.
However, the former employs a combination of Wi-Fi and other innovative technology to allow you one-touch operation and control.
In its most basic form, you can download an app or pair the fan to your smart home system. Then, you can use the said app or voice command to control the fan, turning it on or off and even controlling the speed and the light.
And because it is connected to your home Wi-Fi connection, you can control them not only across the room but even across the seas.
In addition to that, the next generation and smarter smart fans are having built-in sensors that are able to sense a change in temperature, room activities, thus enabling them to automatically turn on or off accordingly.
But how do they know it? Is it some sort of sorcery? Well, that’s technology for you!
It uses a system called passive-infrared sensor (PIR) which emits infrared signal that can detects any movement that cuts through its signal.
Once the signal detects movement, the ultrasonic sensor sends out a sound wave that’ll bounce back to the sensor once it contacts an object such as a human or wall.
Those signals are the ones that “tell” the fan what to do.
So there you have it! Some information about the smart fans that you need to know whether for your common knowledge or for you to consider buying one!
