Besides, in terms of features, R5 is still more superior than the R6. However, even if R6 has this inferiority impression from the R5, it still has some substantial and breakthrough features that Canon offered in EOS R5.
This definitely makes the R5 R6 duo becomes potential cameras to release in 2020. And more interestingly, they also marked Canon’s debut in offering In-Body Image Stabilization on their mirrorless fullframe system. Is it good or is it bad? Let’s find out in Canon EOS R6 Review below.
Canon EOS R6 Review; Camera Construction
From the appearance, Canon EOS R6 is very similar to the EOS R5 with all that deep grip and comfortable handling. However, you will easily notice that LCD display on top is missing. It also has weather sealing, and strong form factor.
On the backside, we can see quite large 3.69 MP EVF which will give photographer a clear vision toward the frame area. Canon claims that this EVF has 119.8fps refresh rate, which means that you won’t even see any blackout.
After shooting, photographer can review their pictures on 1.62 articulating display on the back. Yes, it is fully articulating, means that shooting in difficult angle is very possible with EOS R6.
EOS R6 Sensor and Processor
Under the hood, Canon EOS R6 has the soul of earlier series EOS 6D DSLR line. Although both are having similar soul, but apparently there are more to uncover in EOS R6.
It’s obvious since R6 is refreshed product, so Canon tends to offer more updates to this camera. In image reproduction, the camera is equipped with CMOS fullframe sensor with resolution 20.1 Megapixel.
This sensor is combined with Digic X processor to result superior image quality. Manufacturer said that the combination in this camera is very similar to their Sport DSLR line, which means faster shutter speed and faster focus acquisition should be very possible.
Based on Canon Europe official release, native ISO ranges from 100 all the way up to 102,400. And if this ISO is still not enough, the range can be expanded from ISO 50 to ISO 204,800.
Talking about sensor resolution, it’s indeed EOS R6 has lower sensor resolution compared to the R5. R5 itself has 45 MP, while in R6 we have to be satisfied with 20.6 MP only.
By making this difference, it’s obvious that Canon tries to be versatile in their new mirrorless Fullframe line. R5 is targeting more professional market, while R6 is more like for casual shooter.
EOS R6 Autofocusing System and Burst Rate
In focusing area, second generation of Dual Pixel CMOS AF II is offered to provide advance phase-detection autofocus.
For Canon camera user, they must be familiar enough with this Dual AF system that’s claimed to offer faster and more accurate focusing system.
Canon also said that the new autofocus system in R6 utilizes 6.072 selectable AF points that covers 100% areas of the frame. Moving from one point to another is very fast as focus acquisition time of this camera is just 0.05 second.
While managing shutter speed in 12 frame per second, the camera also offers 5-axis IBIS which Canon calls it as LP-E6NH System. This speed can even be increased to 20 fps if you switch to electronic shooter.
Together, all these features are able to create super stable footage with minimum noise. That’s why many Canon EOS R6 Review suggest that this camera is very capable to be used in sport and wildlife shooting.
Canon EOS R6 Video Recording Capability
Video recording capability is also downgraded from the R5 that can record video in 8K. Although it’s downgraded from R5, but the video capability in R6 is very competitive in the market.
It offers 10 bits 4K resolution video in 60 FPS. Interestingly, the video is un-crop, so it’s full 4K video resolution.
It’s even said that the camera is one of Canon’s first line to feature un-cropped 4K video. In the lower 1080P resolution, you’ll get 120 FPS, which is pretty much a video standard these days.
On side of camera body, you will find dual memory card slot with memory used is from UHS-II SD Card, headphone and mic connector which will be perfect match for the vlogger, and HDMI connector.
Besides wired connectivity, Canon also equipped the camera with advance Wi-Fi technology and Bluetooth technology that can be used for doing file transfer and remotely control the camera from your mobile device.
Canon EOS R6 Review; Price and Availability
Just like its older brother, Canon EOS R6 has very big potential to be one of the best camera releases in 2020.
It has everything casual photographer and videographer needs: Advance AF system, 5-axis IBIS, faster burst rate, and un-cropped 4K Video resolution.
Compared to the earlier R5 [we also did Canon EOS R5 review before], the camera may look a bit inferior.
But, remembering that both are segmenting different target, it seems like EOS R5 and R6 will be the best strategy for Canon to penetrate in every market layer.
Regarding availability, you should be able to pre-order this camera from July 9th, while shipping will begin somewhere within August.
For the price, although there’s still no official confirmation, but it’s recommended that price starts from 2499 USD for body only.
