On July 15, 2026, Thailand, through the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC), announced changes to the radiation exposure safety standards. This follows the approval of revisions to the draft announcement regarding human health safety standards for radio communication equipment.
The NBTC finalized technical updates to the radiation exposure safety standards at its 34th meeting of 2025, held in November 2025. These changes include several provisions that will alter the process for applying for type approval certification in Thailand.
In connection with these standard updates, the NBTC has opened a public consultation for participation. This article will outline the changes made to the new radiation exposure safety standards.
Key Changes to the New Radiation Exposure Safety Standards
Technical changes to the radiation exposure safety standards stem from a meeting held in November 2025. These results will be the focus of the upcoming consultation.
To adapt and provide feedback, you need to be aware of the changes that have been made. Here are the key changes:
First, there has been an update to the definition of radiation exposure safety. This change is based on the ICNIRP 2010 and ICNIRP 2020 guidelines.
Second, the NBTC has also revised the exposure limits for electromagnetic fields (EMF). Currently, these exposure limits apply to all radiocommunication equipment.
Third, the previous radiation exposure safety standards applied to frequencies ranging from 9 kHz to 300 GHz. In the draft amendment, this range has been expanded to 8.3 kHz–300 GHz. This brings the standards into compliance with Thailand’s agreed-upon National Frequency Allocation Table (2024).
Fourth, there are additions to the new standard. Currently, for radiation exposure safety testing, simultaneous exposure from various sources will be measured.
Public Consultation
Regarding the draft of the new radiation exposure safety standards, stakeholders are invited to submit their suggestions. Input and comments on the draft NBTC announcement will be accepted from July 15, 2026, through September 14, 2026.
Comments must be submitted in writing directly to the NBTC office or via email to phannipong.t@nbtc.go.th. In addition to written input, the NBTC is also holding a public hearing at its office in Bangkok.
This public hearing is scheduled for September 8, 2026, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The event can be attended either in person or online. The NBTC is accepting registrations for the public hearing until September 4, 2026.
Impact on Thailand Type Approval
The new radiation exposure safety standards will certainly impact the Thailand type approval process. EMF limits, operating frequencies, and the cumulative exposure from multiple sources will serve as benchmarks in the testing process once these regulations take effect.
This will depend on the outcome of the ongoing public consultation. Details regarding the implementation of these new regulations will, of course, be announced only after a decision has been made based on input from various stakeholders.
