Korea: Revisioning EMC Standard for Platform Screen Door Sensors

On December 31, 2025, the National Radio Research Agency (RRA) issued Notification No. 2025-22. The amendment concerns the revision of the Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standard for Platform Screen Door (PDS) sensors.

The change in the EMC standard for platform screen door sensors was due to reported damage issues. PSD damage is caused by broadband 5G cellular communication signals.

Future EMC regulations for platform screen door sensors are expected to ensure broadband radiation immunity from PSD laser sensors (or LiDAR sensors).

New EMC Standard for Platform Screen Door Sensors

Korea Revisioning EMC Standard for Platform Screen Door Sensors 2

Notification No. 2025-22, regarding the EMC standard for platform screen door sensors, comes with minor changes. There are two main points of change.

First, it relates to the addition of a “broadband radiated RF electromagnetic field” resistance standard to the body port resistance standard in the “Electromagnetic Compatibility Standard for Multimedia Devices” (Item 2, Item A, [Appendix 12]).

Second, regarding information about the effective date of the notification and other changes to the notification (Additional Provisions, Articles 1 and 2).

This requirement applies only to the laser sensors (or LiDAR sensors) of platform screen doors (PSDs), and one of the five test conditions (criteria) is selected and applied.

The test signal uses the 5G TM1.1 100 MHz modulated signal, and detailed information on the signal can be found in Annex K of KS C 9835.

Other notification changes

In addition to the changes to Appendix 12 of the EMC standard for platform screen door sensors, two other notifications have also changed. These are the following:

  1. The Notice on Conformity Assessment of Broadcasting and Communications Equipment
  2. The Notice on the Designation and Management of Testing Agencies for Broadcasting and Communications Equipment

When Will This Regulation Take Effect?

Although released on December 31, 2025, the changes to the EMC standard for platform screen door sensors will not take effect immediately in early 2026. A six-month transition period, public awareness, and readiness for the changes will be required.

Notification No. 2025-22 will only take effect on July 1, 2026. During the transition period, the old regulations will remain in effect. However, after the transition period ends, the new regulations will fully comply.

Impact for Korea Type Approval

Changes to the EMC standard for platform screen door sensors will undoubtedly impact Korea type approval. All stakeholders need to understand how these changes will occur.

Manufacturers also need to understand changes in testing conditions and methods to adapt to devices being tested and marketed in Korea. Understanding these changes early on will help you be better prepared during the transition.

So, when the new regulations officially come into effect, you can immediately adapt. This way, your device will be more market-ready, with guaranteed safety and legality.
