Bahrain Type Approval Summary

Bahrain is one of the most advanced, liberal, and mature telecommunications markets in the Middle East, particularly within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) regions. Compared to Oman, Bahrain leads in the speed of technology adoption and infrastructure density.

This is evidenced by data released by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which states that Bahrain ranks 6th globally out of 159 countries on the ICT Development Index (IDI) with a score of 97.5.

With an area of approximately 780 to 827 km² and a population of around 1.6 million, Bahrain is an attractive Information and Communications Technology (ICT) market to explore. Therefore, it is important for manufacturers and importers to be aware of the applicable compliance requirements there.

Bahrain’s compliance instrument is called “Type Approval Certification.” This results in a Type Approval Certificate issued by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA), an independent agency that reports directly to the Council of Ministers.

The TRA of Bahrain was established under Telecommunications Law No. 48 of 2002. Its responsibilities include the technical evaluation of devices, the issuance of certificates, and market oversight. In addition, the TRA establishes technical rules and guidelines for telecommunications and radio equipment and regulates their use to prevent interference.

Entering the GCC and MENA regions can begin with understanding how to obtain type approval certification in Bahrain. This positions Bahrain as a strategic entry point into GCC and MENA markets.

Who Can Be an Applicant?

Local representative
Required

All type approval applicants must be locally registered commercial companies. Local agents may apply on behalf of foreign companies and manufacturers. But TRA prioritize local importers or traders in Bahrain as applicants.

Local representatives or local importers must be officially registered with a commercial license (Commercial Registration) with the Ministry of Industry and Commerce of Bahrain (MOIC) and registered on the TRA portal.

Application Method

In-country testing
No
Paperwork only
Yes

Type approval certification in Bahrain does not require local testing. The TRA accepts test reports that comply with European Union (EU) requirements. All technical specifications refer to the international ETSI EN standards.

Applicants must have obtained a test report from an ILAC-accredited testing laboratory located anywhere in the world. This test report and all other required documents will be used as part of the product evaluation during the certification process.

The following is a summary of the Type Approval Certification Process in Bahrain:

1. Gather all required documents.

2. Submit the application through the TRA online portal.
3. The system will generate a reference number once the application is submitted and notify the applicant via email.
4. Pay the certification fee.
5. TRA will issue approval or rejection and notify the applicant accordingly.

If the Type Approval application is rejected, the TRA is required to notify the applicant. The applicant must be informed of the reasons for the rejection and may file an appeal with the Authority.

Appeals must be filed within the specified timeframe. If the appeal is accepted, the applicant may submit a new application for approval by resubmitting it to the Authority.
